A Colombian Adoption Story

The Ramirez Family adopted their sweet boy from Colombia. They shared with us their adoption story and what they were thinking and feeling at various stages in the process:

We started our paperwork with ASC in July 2012. We were very excited to finally begin the process of expanding our family. During the process, it felt like a life time before we were assigned a child. We received our referral in October 2013. We fell in love when we first saw the photograph of our soon-to-be son. Since the holidays were near we had to wait until the New Year. Our hearts just wanted to bring our son home. We had waited on God’s timing, thus far, and knew we could hold on just a little bit longer. We flew to Colombia at the end of January, a few days before receiving our son, in order to acclimate to the altitude of Bogota. On February 3, 2014 we received our son.

Once our son was given to us on February 3, 2014, we stayed in Bogota until Friday, February 7 (which is my husband’s birthday…God’s timing is always perfect!). On Friday we were allowed to travel within Colombia to Medellin, which is the city my husband is from. While in Medellin, my mother in-law and father in-law, as well as one of my sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws flew in to meet their first grandchild/nephew. Our son was introduced slowly to my husband’s side of the family. Throughout the next couple of weeks my husband, myself, and our son traveled throughout Antioquia and Armenia. As first time parents and being in a foreign country for me, it was challenging, but we bonded as a family. After lots of prayers, we were able to return home at the end of February.

Bringing our son home was a joyous day! Since he was still a baby we kept everything low key. My father picked us up at the airport and brought us home. Once we were home, my mother and step-father come over to meet their newest grandchild. Our son adapted well to his new environment and loved all his new toys.

ASC walked us through every step of the process. They are very knowledgeable about adopting Colombia.

ASC is so thankful for the Ramirez family and for their adoption story! YOU have an opportunity to help more orphans in Colombia by donating to the Viva La Vida event on November 7th.
